The Lucky Country

That's what Australia is supposed to be. and in a lot of ways we are, we all have a roof over our heads, we have food in our fridges, we have a government (whether you like them or not) that is doing what they see best for our country and isn't corrupt. we don't have war on our doorstep let alone in our country and the biggest problems are trying to close the gap between races; not having one declare war on the other.
however, this luck comes with a price. one that young Australians are paying heavily. literally. as a young Australian, i have to work 2 jobs (am still looking for the second btw) while studying full time to simply pay my bills and get by. it takes $60 to fill up my little car (its a Getz), then to do a decent food shop (so i dont go overboard eating out during the week) its at least $150, and then whatever bills on top of that. Utilities- $160; rent ($200 a week, for a room in a shared house- and that's cheap for most houses up here.) now for someone who only gets paid around $450 a week, that leaves little breathing space for when surprise things happen- car rego and license renewals for example. or how about poor kitty needing her nails clipped or a rush visit to the vet. don't even bother with an $80 visit to the doctor cause that doesn't include whatever medication or follow ups are prescribed. i don't qualify for extra government handouts cause a)  my parents earn too much b) i work too much and c) i'm doing all my study externally. as for jobs, not that im looking for a steady job or career at the moment, but those in themselves are so hard to find. they are either taken up by someone who is far older and technically more qualified or you need experience before someone will let you near those jobs, but no one will give you experience (or in my case, i'm too expensive to hire as a casual employee and employers would rather a fresh out of school 18yo who they only have to pay minimum wage to). so i'm stuck with casual retail work. which means i may or may not get enough shifts to live for the next fortnight. now i don't mean for this to sound whiney, but this is what is happening. i don't feel entitled- i know that i will have to work my way up to where i want to be, but when i'm passed over because of my age, and i find out someone less experienced and younger than me has gotten the job- it gets a little frustrating. so to those who say that we should be happy cause we're young; or to suck it up and work it out (though there are a few people who need to be told that more often, the majority of us don't) or that we're whiney and entiltled and should just take what we're given... actually think about what is in front of us before making snap judgments.
